Event The Platters Live Dates/Times Sunday, December 13 at 3 PM Description “The Platters” have recorded nearly 400 songs, have sold over 80 million copies of those songs, and have performed throughout the world, winning many awards and an induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1990. The Platters, over the years, have appeared in 27 movies such as “Rock Around the Clock,” “Girl’s Town,” “Europe by Night,” and many more. The original members consisted of Tony Williams, Zola Taylor, David Lynch, Paul Robi, and Herb Reed the founder of the group in 1954. Their first hit in 1955 on Mercury Records was ‘Only You’, followed by ‘Smoke Get in Your Eyes’, ‘My Prayer’, ‘The Great Pretender’ and ‘Magic Touch’ just to name a few. While ‘The Platters’ have divided over the years’ members have come and gone. Some of the members formed their own groups. Paul Robi and Zola Taylor recruited, one of the most intense bass singers of this era Benjamin BJ. Mitchell who was fortunate to record ‘The Platters Greatest Hits’ along with Paul Robi and Zola Taylor. For over forty years Benjamin Mitchell has maintained the pose, sound and perfection of the Platters with ‘The Platters Live’. Event Los Medanos College Presents An evening with director John Singleton Dates/Times December 8, 2015 @ 7PM Description Producer, director and screenwriter John Singleton has helped to create some of the more prominent and esteemed black films in the past decade. He exploded onto the screen with his first film, Boyz N the Hood, a tough, intelligent, plan-speaking look at friends in gang-ridden South Central L.A. He earned Oscar nominations for best original screenplay and best director, becoming the youngest director and the first African American filmmaker to do so. He went on to produce and direct 2 Fast 2 Furious, starring the late Paul Walker, and Rosewood, starring John Voight and Ving Rhames. He wrote and directed Baby Boy starring Oscar nominee Taraji P. Henson and Shaft starring Samuel L. Jackson. Among his other works are Higher Learning starring Omar Epps and Laurence Fishburne, and Poetic Justice. In 2006, he produced his second independent film, Illegal Tender, the story of a mother and son who flee from the thugs who killed his father. He has directed commercials for AT&T and Jeep. Singleton has claimed numerous awards, including the LAFCA New Generation Award, the MTV Movie Award for Best New Filmmaker, the New York film Critics Award for Best new Director, the Special Award for Directorial Debut of the Year and the ShoWest Award for Screenwriter of the Year. His complete body of work was saluted by the Directors Guild of America in 2013. Currently, Singleton is set to direct Blame Rio!, a Universal Studios film. He is also developing an HBO series entitled Club Life. Recently, he has written articles for the Hollywood Reporter as a guest columnist.
