Preservation Hall Jazz Band – April 15, 2017. 8pm

Event The Preservation Hall Jazz Band Dates/Times Saturday, April 15, 2017 at 8PM Description The Preservation Hall Jazz Band derives its name from Preservation Hall, the venerable music venue located in the heart of New Orleans’ French Quarter, founded in 1961 by Allan and Sandra Jaffe. The band has traveled worldwide spreading their mission to nurture and perpetuate the art form of New Orleans Jazz. Whether performing at Carnegie Hall or Lincoln Center, for British Royalty or the King of Thailand, this music embodies a joyful, timeless spirit. Under the auspices of current director, Ben Jaffe, the son of founders Allan and Sandra, Preservation Hall continues with a deep reverence and consciousness of its greatest attributes in the modern day as a venue, band, and record label. The PHJB began touring in 1963 and for many years there were several bands successfully touring under the name Preservation Hall. Many of the band’s charter members performed with the pioneers who invented jazz in the early twentieth century including Buddy Bolden, Jelly Roll Morton, Louis Armstrong, and Bunk Johnson. Band leaders over the band’s history include the brothers Willie and Percy Humphrey, husband and wife Billie and De De Pierce, famed pianist Sweet Emma Barrett, and in the modern day Wendell and John Brunious. These founding artists and dozens of others passed on the lessons of their music to a younger generation who now follow in their footsteps like the current lineup. Event Mister Roberts Dates/Times Friday – November 11, 2016 at 8:00 PM Saturday- November 12, 2016 at 2:00pm & 8:00 PM Sunday – November 13, 2017 at 2:00 PM Description Present by Pittsburg Community Theatre. This rowdy, realistic saga of a group of American sailors aboard a Navy cargo vessel in the Pacific shows the crew suffering from that deadly boredom that is part of the routine of war. To the ship’s company, the Skipper is a cantankerous, small-minded man and every one of them conspires against him as the ship pursued its runs from Apathy to Tedium and back again. They are on a cargo mission, so little else is going to happen. That Mr. Roberts, [a lieutenant] shared the crew’s dislike for the Captain was one reason for his popularity. Roberts joined the world to fight; he hates being inactive almost as much as he hates the Captain. Privy to the crew’s hijinks against the Skipper, Roberts still feels it’s his duty to retain some discipline. After winning many ingenious battles against the Skipper, Roberts at last wins himself a transfer to combat duty. It was this transfer that cost him his life on a destroyer off Japan. Comedy: Will Durst in Elect to Laugh 2016. Oct. 8, 2016. 8pm

Event Will Durst in Elect to Laugh 2016 Dates/Times October 8, 2016 @ 8PM Description ELECT TO LAUGH with Will Durst is a hysterical hybrid chasing down the presidential election cycle like white on rice with material as up to date as the latest tweet from DC. It will blend monologues and commentary and perhaps the occasional rant. The show’s intent is to blur the traditional boundaries between stand-up comedy and theater. Through innovation, experimentation, and a ravenous appetite for accessing the topical via the jugular, Durst is out to prove that jokes are not the enemy. With descendants of Mark Twain, George Carlin, and Spalding Gray, Durst will twist the rhythm of stand-up with poetry, punditry, and puzzles o’plenty, planting the production solidly in the strictures and structures of a deconstructed one-man show. Or solo performance piece. Whatever. With a single aim: to mock and scoff and taunt, but with taste. Consider it political comedy for people who don’t like politics.
