Hi there– we’re Clay and Glenda—owners and proprietors of the Delta’s newest bicycle shop—Bay Area Bikes. We opened our second location here in Old Town Pittsburg (our original shop is in uptown Oakland) in May.
People often ask us “Why Pittsburg?” Well, we didn’t know about the bad rep that Pittsburg had many years past, and we certainly didn’t see any evidence of that when we came to visit. We did, however, see a very quaint newly-developed downtown with a unique coffeeshop, a brewery, and several nice eating establishments (footnote—we know cyclists love coffee, beer and food!). We saw a city that made a commitment to cycling infrastructure—to the tune of 47 miles of documented bike lanes and paths, bike racks and Bike Link downtown. We saw a downtown that made a commitment to become more eco-friendly –for example, replacing all streetlights with LEDs and installing an electronic vehicle charging station. In short, we saw an active, forward-looking community with a varied past and bright future.
A fundamental principle of our business is to enhance people’s quality of life. The bicycle alone does this, but most folks need some help in determining how best they can achieve this quality of life with a bike. Since opening in May, we have helped a diabetic reduce his weight, blood pressure and insulin dependence. We’ve gotten a lady with bad arthritis riding a bike, thus keeping her joints moving and reducing the debilitating effects of arthritis. We’ve reduced the number of car trips to the Saturday Farmer’s Market by customers now riding their bikes to Market. We’ve brought residents together on a weekly bike ride, creating a local group of riders from folks that either didn’t have a bike ready to ride or the confidence to ride their bike on the streets. And in addition to the changes that redevelopment brought–the landscape of Pittsburg has changed—there are more people riding their bikes than ever before. We know that we have made the right decision in coming here. We hope that you’ll come to Pittsburg to see us—bring your bike out of the shed and Clay will get it rolling; come buy a tube or a new bike seat, or come take a test ride on a new bike. And then stick around for a brew, a coffee or a meal. We think you’ll like what you find in Old Town.
